Final Lesson of Editing

Thursday, 17th of December

The three of us, spent our last lesson finishing off our children's film.

Ashleigh and Lauren both finished the music ready to import to the Video, Mercedes finished editing by adding some transitions. The film was a few seconds short so what we did was took three photos with the title of the film "Broken-hearted Friends" held by Ashleigh with one of us dissapeared from the photo to represent our idea.

We put both together and it went together amazingly well.

All we need to do now, is the voice over.

Editing.

For the past two lessons Ashleigh and I have been focusing on the music for our film while Mercedes and Rosie focus on the editing. It as been fairly difficult to make sure that the timing of the music is in timing with the film, it has also been challenging to create the music from scratch and find the appropriate music for each character for example, ballet music for 'Charlotte' and Hip hop beats for 'Stacey.'

Rosie and Mercedes have created a short istop motion clip to put in to our film, however, it was hard.

Filming

Day One: Tuesday 8th of December

We took a sequence of photo's on a digital camera against the brick wall and of us messing about on the field. The idea is to then upload into iStop motion and use as part of our childrens film opening. Unfortunatley, we didn't dress like our appropriate characters, but we saw a natural difference in our styles any way, also we were missing one of our group on this day. And had to begin without her.

Day Two: Thursday 10th of December

We filmed the part of the bedroom pinboard, unfortunatley no pin board but we found some doors that could be believed to be wardrobe doors as a substitute. We filmed this instead of iStop motion becuase the class room was not ideal due to wall space. We did consider filming it on the table, but then thought that shadows might not give us the realism we wanted. For the credits we decided to use post-it notes that looked like a girl's notes to herself. We also worked on the music some more.

Day Three: Friday 11th of December

Today we're editing our work because we were told we're going to be one lesson short next week. We have to record the audio of Ashleigh narrating the opening and put it over the footage, along with the music. As we only have 2 lessons next week for editing, we'll have to work fast. Writing the script is next to do.

Troubles and Successes.

Friday 4th of December

Today we decided to make a start on the music for our children's film opening. To do this we tried to use garage band. However, we had some trouble do to the lack of our skills using this software. We managed to pick a few samples, although getting them to go well together was another story. We need to develop our skills in order to make the perfect music piece for our clip.

Brain Wave!

Tuesday 1st of December

Looking at a range of different film openings, children and teenage, such as Juno, Josie and the pussycats, Cheetah Girls, The Break up and Freaky Friday. We decided:-

Target Audience:- Young girls, 11 years old, 'coming of age'.

Plot: - A cork board it a girl's bedroom, starting off with pictures of them young together then growing older and staying friends, however, they begin to drift apart in the pictures. We decided that the four main characters would have typical stereo-types as they have grown older such as a skater girl, a posh ballet dancer, a musical chav girl and a geek.

Location:- In the 'posh ballet dancer's' bedroom. We will use a pink sheet of paper for the background and a cork board to create this illusion. We will bring in pictures from when we were children

Sound:- We think the opening to our children's film should have a narrator, since it's partly set in the 'posh girls' bedroom we decided it would be her. The narrator would introduce the characters. The music playing in the background we all decided would be acoustic when the characters were together, but then changing for each of the character's , i.e
Posh Ballet Dancer= Classical Music,
Skater girl = Rock/Punk
Chav Girl = Hip Hop/Grime
Geek Girl = Upbeat Techno

Rough Script:-
At the beginning, this was us (picture) thats Charlotte, Stacey and Brody we have been best friends since i can remember. We did everything together.
This is Charlotte, she has always loved to dance. She's the popular one out of the four of us.
Stacey, well she had always been loud, a little aggressive and boy does she know how to party but she knows how to make us laugh.
Then there is Brody, she's a skater, spends most of her time with the 'lad's' down at the skate park. She is very good at it, 3 60 flips and everything.
And this is me (shot of Lucy on her own.) Lucy, let's just say I'm the outsider of the group. I spend a lot of my spare time studying whilst the others are out shopping.

Ideas For Our Childrens Film.

Different types of Genres:-
Adventure,
Comedy,
Sci-fi,
Fantasy,
Romance,
Animation,
Musical,
Period

Certificate for Children's Film: -

U Universal – Suitable for all It is impossible to predict what might upset any particular child. But a ‘U’ film should be suitable for audiences aged four years and over. ‘U’ films should be set within a positive moral framework and should offer reassuring counterbalances to any violence, threat or horror. If a work is particularly suitable for a pre-school child to view alone, this will be indicated in the Consumer Advice.

Considering this we need to make this 3 minute clip suitable for its target audience.

Ideas:-
Looking at all of the unique genres of children's film, we feel that it would be easier to not do animation as it uses to much technology and time compared to if we act ourselves.
We want our clip to contain some humor, a dynamic narrative, unforgettable characters, and emotional power. Examples where this has happened in films before such as, Sully and Boo part at the end of Monster inc. (www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/film/3647519/what-makes-a-children's-film-great.html)

Kung Fu Panda Opening Credits

Friday 27th of November

From this opening clip we learn that the genre of this film is Adventure/Comedy. We learn this through the dialogue and plot of the film. We also know that this film is aimed at children as it is animated.

The first character that we see is Po the panda, from this we can gather that he is the main character. Throughout the clip the dialogue that was used suggests that he is a great kung fu warrior. "His enemies would go blind from his pure awesomeness." When he walks into the bar the reaction from the crowd suggests that he is well respected and of a high status. However, once the clip ends we learn that the previous was all a dream, as he hits the ground of his bedroom floor.
The other characters which we see are the 'Furious Five' who are allies with the panda.

From the beginning of the clip the music suggests that the film is set in an oriental location. Later on we learn that it is based in China. The animation and drawings suggests that the film is of an oriental style following a well known drawing style of china, because of the building shapes and colour.

Preliminary Task

Friday 20th of November

Rosie: Making the video was fun apart from our appalling acting...Editing was easier than I expected but quite time consuming. I'm quite pleased with the end product, especially our match-on action shot.

Mercedes: The camera work was quite straight forward, and when following the 180 degree rule, the trick to film the conversation from one perspective and then the other, really make editing easier.

Ashleigh: The preliminary task was quite a fun experience. It was our first time to use the cameras and final cut to edit our clip. My skills at using final cut have developed and prepared me for future work. I am pleased with our final clip, and I think our effort showed. However, I have noticed little things that could be developed, and as a group we will improve them on our next piece.

Lauren: When we were first given the preliminary task Dave told us to 'keep it simple.' However, in the beginning we chose to ignore him and tried to involve loads of flashy camera angles. But before we even got to filming we struggled to come up with ideas of what to do.... but then.... what could be more simple then using a 'Hills' style argument about a boy. We then developed this idea and I believe that throughout this experience I have learnt to appreciate the camera work and editing as it is a lot harder then i originally thought.
